Mosasaur Skull World Class Specimen paleontology

This is an impressive Mosasaur skull that belonged to a fearsome 35-foot predator and measures nearly 5 feet in length. Mosasaurs were ancient reptiles that inhabited the oceans around 70 million years ago, during the last period of the dinosaurs. These creatures gained widespread popularity after being featured in the Hollywood movie, Jurassic World.

The first Mosasaur fossils were discovered near the Meuse River in Germany in 1764, while this particular specimenwe found in Sidi Chennane Basin . Mosasaurs were the apex predators of the prehistoric oceans and possessed an incredible biting force that far surpassed even the largest crocodile and more than doubled the body length of a Great White shark.

Their jaws were massive and could expand to swallow large prey, including other mosasaurs, sea turtles, and sharks. The upper jaw contained two sets of razor-sharp teeth, including curved teeth that securely hooked their prey. Interestingly, both sets of teeth are still present in this excellent mosasaur fossil.

Despite living during the Cretaceous Period, Mosasaurs are not classified as dinosaurs but are actually related to monitor lizards such as the Komodo dragon.
